Ages

What "age" means

The age recorded against an individual refers to their age at the time of the Census. For the 1901 Census it was 31st March 1901. In some cases the age given to the enumerator may not have been accurate.

How "age" is recorded

In most cases age was recorded as a complete number of years. However, for young children or babies, age may have been expressed in a variety of ways eg: "3 weeks" or "6 months" or "newborn".

Using "age" in the Search for a person

You do not need to know the exact age of a person to use this facility. The index only contains whole numbers. Part numbers e.g. "1½ years" have been rounded down with ages under 1 year being considered 0.

Example if you think John Simpson Smyth was about 18 at the time of the Census but you are not certain try entering the following: 18 years with range +/- 5 years. This will return any John Simpson Smyths who were between the ages of 13 and 23 years of age.
