Place Keywords

This field can help you to narrow down the scope of your search to a particular area even if you are not sure of all the place details. Placing word(s) in Place Keyword field looks for matches in the Administrative County, Civil Parish, Ecclesiastical Parish and Town/Village/ Hamlet index fields.
Example if you wish to search in an area called Upton but you are not sure whether this is the Civil Parish name or the village name, enter Upton in the Place Keywords rather than in a specific field.

If your area name is a phrase you should separate the words with a space.

Example enter Upton upon Severn to search only for entries that contain these three words, as a complete phrase, in one of the place fields.

You can include variations on the place name by using wildcard characters.

Example enter Pembroke* to search for Pembroke, Pembroke St Mary and Pembrokeshire

Note: if you are searching for a person, remember that the Place fields relate to where that person was on the night of the Census. This may not be the same as their place of birth or their normal place of residence.
